Meal Delivery or an In-Home Personal Chef? They Solve Different Problems.

·Alex & Selkie

Meal delivery is extraordinarily convenient.

Choose meals online. A box arrives. Heat something when you want it. For many people, that is exactly the right solution.

An in-home personal chef solves a different problem.

The distinction is not simply whether one meal tastes better than another. It is about how food becomes part of someone's life.

Meal delivery starts with the menu

Most meal services begin by showing you what is available. You choose from that selection. That model works well because it can serve thousands of customers efficiently.

A personal chef can begin somewhere else. With you.

What do you actually like? What did you grow up eating? Are you a substantial-lunch person? Do you want small portions? Do you like vegetables softer than restaurant kitchens usually cook them? Do you dislike leftovers unless they can become something different?

Those details are difficult to build into a mass delivery system. They are easy to build into a relationship.

Freshness works differently

A delivered meal has to survive production, packaging, transportation and storage. That does not inherently make it bad. But it shapes what can be prepared.

When cooking happens in the client's own kitchen, the menu can be designed around what works beautifully for that individual household. Some things are intended for that day's lunch. Others are chosen specifically because they reheat well. A sauce may be packaged separately. A roast can become tomorrow's sandwich. Fresh herbs can actually be fresh.

It is less about filling containers and more about planning a week of food. You can see examples of the kinds of meals we prepare on our menu page.

Appetite is not a subscription setting

Appetite changes. Preferences change. A dish everyone assumed would be loved may barely get touched. Another disappears immediately.

A recurring chef learns. That matters particularly for someone eating alone. The objective is not to provide the theoretically correct amount of food. It is to prepare food somebody actually wants to eat.

Then there is the visit itself

This is perhaps the greatest difference.

Meal delivery is designed to minimize human involvement. That is part of its convenience. A personal chef service deliberately includes it.

There is someone in the kitchen. There is conversation. There are familiar aromas. There is the question, "How was that chicken last week?" Over time, the chef knows where the pans are, how the client takes their coffee and whether mushrooms should ever appear again.

For some clients, that relationship is incidental. For others, it becomes one of the best parts of the service.

Which is better?

Neither, universally.

If you primarily need inexpensive convenience and enjoy choosing from a rotating catalog, meal delivery may be an excellent solution.

If you want food created around one person's preferences, prepared in their own kitchen, with the consistency of a recurring familiar chef, an in-home personal chef offers something fundamentally different.

And in Savoyage's case, the recurring relationship can extend beyond food into thoughtful household concierge support and, when authorized, communication with designated family members.

Both approaches put food in the refrigerator. Only one begins with the person standing in front of it.

If you'd like to understand what the full Savoyage service looks like, that's a good place to start.
