Behind Savoyage

Why We Started Savoyage

The gap we saw, the people we were thinking about, and what we set out to build.

People ask us this sometimes. It is a reasonable question. Personal culinary service for older adults is not an obvious business to start. So where did it come from?

The honest answer is that it came from watching people we cared about navigate the later years of independent living — and noticing what was missing.

What We Saw

We saw older adults who had cooked beautifully for decades gradually stop cooking, not because they had lost the knowledge or the desire, but because the effort had become too much. The planning, the shopping, the standing, the cleanup — each step manageable on its own, but together, exhausting. The result was not starvation. It was a quiet diminishment. Crackers instead of meals. Convenience food instead of real cooking. The pleasure of the table, slowly fading.

We saw families who lived at a distance, worrying in the particular way that distance produces — not knowing, not being able to check, relying on phone calls that said I'm fine without being able to verify what fine actually meant.

We saw a gap between what was available and what was actually needed. There were meal delivery services. There were grocery delivery services. There were, at the other end of the spectrum, full-time care arrangements. But in the middle — for people who were genuinely independent, who wanted to stay in their homes, who needed good food and a trusted presence but not medical care — there was very little.

What We Wanted to Build

We wanted to build something that treated older adults as the full, particular people they are. Not as a demographic with a set of standardized needs, but as individuals with histories, preferences, memories, and opinions about how they like their eggs.

We wanted it to be genuinely good. Not adequate. Not nutritionally sufficient. Good — the kind of food that makes a week better, that you look forward to, that connects you to the pleasure of eating well.

We wanted it to be personal. The same people, every week. A relationship, not a transaction. Someone who knows you well enough to remember that you mentioned wanting to try that soup, and who shows up the following week having made it.

And we wanted it to be honest about what it is and what it isn't. We are not healthcare providers. We are not a substitute for family. We are a culinary service with a genuine commitment to the people we work with — and we think that is worth something.

Why Treasure Valley

We are based in Boise and serve the Treasure Valley because this is where we live, and because we believe that the kind of service we provide requires genuine local presence. We are not a franchise. We are not a platform. We are two people who cook, who care about the work, and who are building something we would want for our own families.

That is where Savoyage came from. That is what we are trying to do.
